Get Your Apartment Ready For The Holiday Season
Well, the holiday season is nearly upon us – it’s that time of the year when almost the whole world is gearing up to celebrate Christmas. This global festival is now very popular in India too, and thousands of people, irrespective of religion or social status bring the festive cheer home with Christmas decorations that are readily available in stores.
Just because you live in an apartment in Palakkad, it does not mean that you have to miss out on the gaiety. You may have to tone things down a bit but you can still have loads of fun.
First decide where you’re going to set up the Xmas tree; then clear the place – remove any furniture or clutter from there. You can purchase an artificial tree from the stores, as a real tree may not be feasible in your flat. Depending on how big the room is, settle on a size – you can get trees of all sizes nowadays. Set it up, and decorate it with lights, strings, ribbons, balls and more.
You can also string lights in the balcony, windows, door frames and around mirrors, securing them with tape. Fun tip: Grandma’s old pickle jars may come in handy, if they are transparent: fill these with strings of light and keep them wherever you want in your flat.
Hang streamers and ribbons from light fixtures, door knobs, handles, lamps and mirrors. To give your apartment a vibrant, cheerful look, wrap gift paper around your doors – at least the main door, if you feel it’s too much work.
Place a couple of wind chimes in your balcony – the tinkling sounds add to the festive spirit.
You can hang colourful Christmas stockings from door knobs; you can even make your own stocking décor – with a little felt paper, just make a cutout, and stick it to the wall.
If possible, use red, green and white colored mats, table cloths, runners, placemats and so on all over in your apartment, to bring home the Christmas colours. You can also get to buy disposable plates and glasses in Christmas themes.
Stream Christmas carols and play them to create a Christmas feel; burn cinnamon scented candles in the evening, and place cinnamon in breathable bags around your Palakkad apartment to hint at the smells of Christmas.
If you don’t have potted plants at home, bring some; or you can buy artificial holly boughs and wreaths that you can reuse the next year.
Who can forget cakes? Make sure to place a couple of rich plum cakes on the table to serve when guests drop in – after all, it’s the season to be merry!
